::This New House:: Based on work by://Janel Holcomb//
Essential question:How can a home be designed to have minimal impact on the environment?”

Overview

For this project, titled "This New House", you will be learning about sustainable architecture, the practice of addressing ecological concerns in the design and construction of buildings. The reality today is that home construction, in particular is similar to home construction 50 years ago. Why are we so behind the times? The goal of Sustainable Architecture is to design and build attractive, comfortable, affordable shelter that does no harm to the environment in its manufacture or in its use (Trying to build houses while harming the earth as little as possible). With the new economic stimulus plan rewarding green building ventures, the nation is on the lookout for people who can step up and design sustainable buildings.

Objective:

Design and advertise a home for a 4-person family living in the US using (around 3,000 sq. feet max) at least one Sustainable Architecture principle or Green Energy Source.

The following assignments will be completed and you will present all to the class in whatever format you decide is most appropriate. For example, You may import your drawings etc. into PowerPoint and have a handout of some kind such as a brochure. On the other hand you might use Flash or Movie Maker to create a commercial and use your blog to make a website for your architectural design company, and upload your materials there as images or ".pdf" files. Don't feel overwhelmed. We'll learn about all of these tools.
  1. Research (tagged to your student Diigo account and our class Diigo group). (Fall of 2011 will use OneNote instead)
  2. Scale Floor Plan drawings (rendered in Google Sketchup or MS Visio)
  3. Student Choice 1:
    • Promotional Materials
    • Interior design Moodboards
    • Landscape Design Plan
    • Elevation Renderings in Sketchup
  4. Student Choice 2 (given time)
    • Promotional Materials
    • Interior design Moodboards
    • Landscape Design Plan
    • Elevation Renderings in Sketchup
  5. Pecha-Kucha presentation of project as endcap (last week of class)

Part 1: Research

Now you need to find out two important things: What green technology [ies] you want to use and what kind of house you want to build. Also, you need to make sure that your green technology choices work well with your home design of choice. For example, shipping containers don't make a good French Country style home.

Part 2: Technical Drawing

General Points: Stuff I shouldn't have to say but will...

The Basics:
  • Each architecture firm has 1/2 acre of land to build on. However, you decide on the shape of the land, orientation of the site, surrounding landscape, and location in the US.
  • Each plan will have to incorporate a few design features in terms of landscape, construction, or components that are considered green.

Ready to get started??

  • Technical drawing in Visio

    • Visio is a 2d technical drawing and diagramming program. Your result will look a lot like a standard house "blueprint", much like you'll find on many of the floorplan sites we'll look at. This application is part of the MS Office Suite, and therefore should be relatively easy to learn

Sharing your plans with classmates as you work...

  • Save / Export your plan as a jpeg.
  • Share it in Edmodo
  • Give a Positive comment and a Question to at least 1 other student.

Part 3 & 4: Student Choice

Now, you have an opportunity to choose your own adventure.

More Drawing

If you're totally stoked by this technical drawing thing, keep going. Try to go above and beyond what you've done so far.

Something Completely Different

Maybe you're painfully sick of technical drawing. You perhaps struggled with it or just didn't enjoy it. You could

Part 5: Prepare Your Presentation.

Presentation Skills

(NETS 6:a-d) The problem with 'PowerPoints' is that you have to listen to each one. That wouldn't be so bad if students didn't animate every bullet and write every word they intend to say as bullets. We'll explore several ways to create presentations that will eliminate the dreaded animated bullets.
  • [15] You will create and deliver effective presentations, using Show & Tell techniques.
