Introduction / Welcome

Welcome to the Spring Grove Middle School Technology Wiki. This wiki is intended to be both an experiment / exercise in the the art of wiki use, and a resource tool for students and staff.

A reference work / not a class website

This is not our class website. For agendas, projects, and more, go to our class website. This wiki will act as a textbook for our class, providing a clearinghouse for curated resources and miscellaneous errata related to the various projects available to students.

Every effort will be made as we move forward to make this a true wiki in terms of content, collaboration, contribution, and even layout. We'll try to avoid the standard educator wiki pitfalls, such as creating a class web site with a lot of flashy widgets that do little to enhance the content.

Yes, this is the stuff that's important....
Fluency, Design, & Ethics! The objectives you'll actually be graded on this year (listed below) fall into these three broad categories. If you really care to make life more simple, productive, and beautiful through the application of technology, you'll need to learn more about Fluency, Design, & Ethics!

Fluency


Today’s life and work environments require far more than the ability to follow directions. The ability to navigate the complex life and work environments in the globally competitive information age requires flexible problem-solvers who can handle sudden changes to rules, who don't need to be supervised to get the job done, and who can lead when necessary.

Life is essentially one project after another. The literate can complete a project when told what to do and when to do it. The fluent can plan and execute the "what to do and when to do it" because they understand why they're doing it and how the pieces fit together. Computer Information Technology is a great environment for practicing advanced project management. In this class you will never have a "Photoshop" or "Power Point" project. Instead you will manage large projects that require you to leverage resources from a host of installed software, online applications, web databases, and more.


Remember, Literacy makes you a better follower. Fluency makes you a better leader!

Fluency Objectives include:
  • [1] You will learn & apply problem solving skills related to computer, application and network problems (FLEXIBILITY & ADAPTABILITY).
  • [2] You will use online resources, such as the agenda, wiki, and videos, to guide & initiate your work (INITIATIVE AND SELF-DIRECTION).
  • [3] Your work will remain focused on the tasks at hand and try to solve your own problems with the online resources and your seat partner (PRODUCTIVITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY).
  • [4] You will use online networks to assist classmates and demonstrate appropriate & professional communications (LEADERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY).
  • [9] You will be able to use "Google Advanced" search strategies.
  • [10] You will understand and be able to apply the Root zone Database to making your searches better.
  • [11] You will experience alternate search tools, such as WolframAlpha.
  • [12] You will obtain and use a social bookmarking account.
  • [13] You will participate regularly in an online social environment for the purpose of professional and academic growth.
  • [14] You will familiarize yourself with a host of online applications for productivity and creativity.
  • [15] You will plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project.
  • [16] You will select and use computer applications effectively and productively.
  • [17] You will apply existing knowledge to create original works to complete a project.
  • [18] You will be able to determine and use the appropriate technology tool(s) for the task at hand in a manner that allows seamless transfer of created objects and documents to flow easily between the selected tools without outside intervention."

Design


People don't communicate in writing anymore... Now we communicate with design. Design is visual! Designers, through training and experience, develop a different lens through which to see the world. They move through spaces, environments, and systems, making observations and developing insights about what works well and what doesn't. They then use those observations and insights to create innovative solutions for everyday problems.
  • [5] You will use observations of examples of effective and ineffective design to develop strategies to improve communication, sustainability, and useability.
  • [6] You will use the relationship between color, typography, layout, and tone to design for a specific audience and purpose.
  • [7] You will employ good typography and color theory to design for impact and readability.
  • [8] You will create and deliver an effective presentation, using Show & Tell techniques, such as the Pecha Kucha method.

Ethics


Even if Fair Use applied to every instance where you used an image you found online, if you graduate today without an understanding of where to go to find and use Creative Commons images you've been done a a disservice.
  • [19] You will use Creative Commons Search to find images, music, and more to modify adapt and build upon in your project..
  • [20] You will familiarize yourself with the workings of copyright and how they apply to what you post online.
  • [21] You will know how to apply a creative commons license to your own work (this is necessary if you use resources that are licensed "share alike")
  • [22] You will observe social norms established in online environments for the good of the community in your digital communications (Netiquette).
  • [4] You will use online networks to assist classmates and demonstrate appropriate & professional communications (LEADERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY).
